2023-24 Sumner HS Marching Band & Color Guard

(Updated 3/24/2024)

....................................................................................

Sumner HS Band Program Students, Parents and Families:

Thanks for a great week and a very busy month of March - looking back at the excellent things that we did over the past month:

  • March 2 Saturday - State BB Pep Band Playoff Game (the 30th performance of the season) at the Tacoma Dome. That was a LOT to ask of students and families and I know our players, coaches and fans really appreciated how much energy and enthusiasm we brought to the games and helped our teams (both BBB and GBB) win SPSL 4A League Basketball Championships.
  • March 9 Saturday - The Big Band Dance at the Phase 1 Commons. Such a nicer place to play and we had a very large crowd in attendance. There was a lot of work done by a lot of people and it really paid-off in a great event both musically and financially. Thank you so much to both students and parents
  • March 16 Saturday - The Valley Region Symphonic Band Contest at Emerald Ridge HS. Both groups did very well (remember that both groups got a I rating by one of the judges and were very close to a I overall rating). Very excellent performances by both groups
  • March 23 Saturday - The Newport HS Jazz Festival-Competition. Both of our Jazz Ensembles did a very fine job at the their first Jazz competition of the year and learned a lot both in the performances and the clinics that followed. Now we’ll use the experience that we received to continue to improve and hopefully we’ll have a great rest of the year.

We did a lot and we did very well at everything (and don’t forget that we’ve been working on our impressive Daffodil Parade music and routines in preparation for our April 5th Friday Stadium Performance and the April 6th Saturday Daffodil Parades that are happening in under 2 weeks!). Look at the incredible versatility we showed in different styles of playing and we challenged ourselves to do our best at every performance. All of you did a terrific job - THANK YOU!

Now let’s focus on our BIGGEST local event of the year coming-up, where we’ll be seen and heard by a stadium full of people and potential future SHS Band Program members on April 5th and then thousands of spectators in Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner, and Orting during the day. We are going to be ready and we are going to do a fantastic job! A few things need to happen:

  • Learn, polish, perfect, and memorize the music and routines
  • Put the great music and routines together with outstanding marching, including step-styles, alignment between and among lines, and TURNS (both left and right - we’ll be doing a lot of them over the 4 parades). Remember our ONLY rehearsals with the entire MB & CG are from 5:00-7:00PM on Wednesday March 27th and Wednesday April 3rd
  • Get your MB & CG uniforms back from being dry cleaned and try them on (they might need to be resized) on April 1st Monday from 6:00-8:00PM (we’ll need some student and parent helpers for that event). Double-check to make sure your shoes and gloves are in great shape and that everything looks and feel right
  • Get yourself prepared to do great performances at each of the 5 Daffodil Festival events!

Again, our upcoming FULL-GROUP REHEARSAL schedule includes:

  • March 27 Wednesday - MB-CG Parade Sectionals and Rehearsal 4:00-7:00PM
  • April 3 Wednesday - MB-CG FINAL Pre-Daffodil Parade Sectionals and Rehearsal 4:00-7:00PM

Daffodil PERFORMANCES ARE:

  • APRIL 5 FRIDAY - MB-CG PRE-DAFFODIL PERFORMANCE - 6:00PM
AT SUNSET STADIUM WITH OTHER DISTRICT MARCHING BANDS (LMS/MMS/SMS/BLHS)
  • APRIL 6 SATURDAY - 2024 DAFFODIL PARADES - AN ALL-DAY EVENT
    • TACOMA - 10:00AM
    • PUYALLUP - 12:30PM
    • SUMNER - 2:30PM
    • ORTING - 5:00PM

So, here we go with another busy and exciting couple of weeks of events. This upcoming week should be a little more relaxed, but next week’s Daffodil Parades week will be intense, with a BIG rehearsal on Wednesday and performances on Friday and Saturday. Let’s be ready:
